"Foreign Affairs" is a collection of thirty-four ironic-laconic short stories in which the authors Ariane Sommer and Esma Annemon Dil give an insightful look behind the polished facade of glamour and the so-called "highlife" encountering perverted illusions of happiness, success and what it means to be a woman or a man today.

The plot leads the female protagonists to  some of the world's most desirable destinations and astray: Woman meets man in Shanghai,

in a Russian nightclub, in the catacombs of Paris or in an Arabian oasis. Each encounter unfolds in its own way and often leaves in its wake the foreboding that gifts of destiny have to be payed for dearly.

Many of these stories are open-ended, allowing the readers to derive their own conclusions.

Ultimately "Foreign Affairs" is a book about the hope and the abyss within the human soul.

Eine Sammlung vierunddreissig ironisch-lakonischer Kurzgeschichten in denen das Autorinnen-Duo Ariane Sommer und Esma Annemon Dil einen wachsamen Blick hinter die polierten Fassaden des Highlife wirft und dabei auf pervertierte Illusionen von Glueck und Erfolg, vom Mann- und Frausein stoesst.

Der Plot fuehrt die Protagonistinnen an die Sehnsuchtsortedieser Welt  und auf Abwege: Frauen und Maenner treffen sich in Shanghai,  in einer Kochshow in Salzburg, in einem russischen Nachtclub, in den Katakomben von Paris oder in einer arabischen Oase. 

 

Jede Begegnung folgt ihrer eigenen Logik - und hinterlaesst die beunruhigende Ahnung, dass Geschenke des Schicksals zuweilen besonders teuer bezahlt werden.

Oft enden die Erzaehlungen offen und bieten Gelegenheit eigene Antworten auf Sinnfragen und das "Spiel mit dem schoenen Schein" zu finden.

Als "Lustbuch" getarnt, behandelt "Foreign Affairs" letztlich menschliche Hoffnungen und Abgruende.
